OUT OF MAYFAIR: GROVE SQUARE GALLERIES PRESENT 'ARIEL' BY DAVID WIGHTMAN
Grove Square Galleries are showcasing ‘Ariel’, a solo exhibition of new works by British contemporary painter David Wightman - paintings, prints, and drawings will be on show until 14th May 2022. Visitors can expect to find striking imaginary landscapes, integrating collage, colour, composition and worlds that blur the line between fiction and reality.
The artist is inspired by the colour theory of Josef Albers and the sublime landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich. Each painting starts with a ‘cartoon’ – Wightman’s own term for his delicate line-drawing studies – before he slowly collages the canvas with hundreds of hand-cut pieces of textured wallpaper. Wightman then paints over the surface. The titles of the paintings are inspired by his interest in mythology, religion, music, and literature.
The artist’s mountainous journey began in the working-class suburbs of Greater Manchester where he grew up. He turned the wallpapered walls of his childhood home into mountains and ravines, influenced by fantasy art he saw in his youth in the 1980s. Later on, he moved to London to study Fine Art at Middlesex University and went on to achieve a Masters in Painting from the prestigious Royal College of Art.
