SIGNET RING TALK FROM FELLOWS AND THE GOLDSMITHS' CENTRE
Mayfair-based Fellows Auctioneers have collaborated with The Goldsmiths’ Centre to present a special signet ring talk by Rachel Church and Castro Smith, who will discuss how signet rings became an identity piece and a sign of status through the ages. This event will take place on 2nd November at 6pm.
Rachel Church, author of multiple acclaimed jewellery books, was curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Her extensive knowledge of jewellery through the ages will ensure a thorough insight on signet rings leading up to the modern day is explored. Castro Smith, a contemporary jeweller based in London, is known for modernising the signet ring. After starting his career in 2013, Smith worked under various expert makers. His engraved signet rings have received wide acclaim. His signet rings come in a variety of detailed designs - often bespoke.
The Goldsmiths’ Centre is the UK’s leading charity for the professional training of goldsmiths. Founded by the Goldsmiths’ Company, one of the Twelve Great Livery Companies of the City of London, its mission is to advance, maintain and develop art, craft, design and artisan skills related to goldsmithing.
Rachel Church, Curator and Author, said: “Signet rings are probably one of the earliest forms of rings and have proved to be long lasting. Even in an age of email and text, where no letter will ever require sealing wax, they continue to be stylish jewels - a way to showcase your good taste and identity on your finger. Signet rings could be decorated with initials, skulls, coats of arms, devices and even a portrait of your pet dog-there is no limit to the possibilities of design.”
Charlotte Dew, Public Programme Manager at the Goldsmiths’ Centre, said: “We are excited to be hosting our first hybrid - online and in-person - event at the Goldsmiths’ Centre in London, in partnership with Fellows Auction House. Signet rings, perhaps the earliest form of ring, have long been popular forms of identification, status symbol and communication. Curator and author Rachel Church and renowned engraver and jeweller Castro Smith will be exploring the signet ring through history as well as its significance for us today.”
This event will take place at 6pm at The Goldsmiths’ Centre on Tuesday 2nd November.
In-person tickets are £15 (includes a glass of wine). Online tickets are £5.
