NEW HOTEL OPENING: THE MAYFAIR TOWNHOUSE, HALF MOON STREET

Today is the grand opening of The Mayfair Townhouse, a beautiful new hotel that is comprised of seven Grade II listed buildings, across 15 Georgian townhouses on Half Moon Street…

The Mayfair Townhouse has drawn inspiration from the street it sits on, which holds a magical charm and has an interesting literary history. Half Moon Street was built between 1730 and 1746, starting out as a regular haunt for bachelors, bohemians and artistic folk in Victorian London. Literary enthusiasts will know that this very spot was the setting for Oscar Wilde’s most famous play, The Importance of Being Earnest. The central fictional character, Algernon Moncrieff, lived, in the bachelor’s chambers at 14 Half Moon Street.

Literary icon, journalist and art critic Robbie Ross once lived on Half Moon Street. Ross was a dear friend of Oscar Wild who was regularly visited by Siegfried Sassoon, one of the leading poets of the First World War. Another iconic fictional character who lived on the street is Bertie Wooster in P.G. Wodehouse’s famous comedies. Budding writers might feel inspired at The Mayfair Townhouse and if this is you, I urge you to grab your Moleskine and head to The Dandy Bar.

The Dandy Bar is somewhere I plan to spend many hours. Inspired by the dandy characters of Mayfair’s past and present, this theatrical, cosy and hedonistic bar is serving up the very best classic cocktails and spirits. Signature cocktails include “The Earl in Mayfair”, made with Dubbonnet Rouge, Mancino Amaranto, Gin Infused Florence Fennel, White Bitter, Cocoa and Wormwood Cordial. If you’re after a classic cocktail, you might be tempted by an Old Fashioned, El Presidente or White Lady.

Minda Dowling, a leading art specialist, has breathed life into the hotel through her careful curation of some unique pieces for The Mayfair Townhouse. Clarita Brinkerhoff’s peacock sculpture is a highlight, sitting at 67 inches high and is made with 25,000 Swarovski crystals. Guests are invited to learn about the art through QR codes - you simply scan as you move throughout the building. How very modern!

Another important note today is that Dianna Beran, Head Concierge at The Mayfair Townhouse, makes up only 3% of women in the Commonwealth to have the Les Clefs d’Or label. Dianna is the ultimate insider with skills and contacts to open many doors. Make sure you go to her with your wild and wonderful requests, no matter how great or small.
