DINING REVIEW: 24 MAYFAIR, THE MEMBERS' CLUB THAT NEVER SLEEPS
24 Mayfair, appropriately named both for its address on 24 Hertford Street and its round-the-clock opening hours, is a new entry on to the Mayfair club scene. The club offers sumptuous interiors, inspired by the Golden Age of Hollywood; an innovative selection of cocktails; and a contemporary Japanese menu with plenty of delectable dishes.
When we arrived at the club, we were ushered into the delightful downstairs bar. They design of this space manages to balance modernity with nods to classic cinema, creating a space that feels both open and private. Decorations on the ceiling recall film reels, and the plush velvet seating offers plenty of options to get comfortable.
We began to peruse the drinks menu, torn between cocktails. The joy of going to a bar where the mixologist knows the menu so well is that we were free to ask for recommendations. Being a generally understated girl, I opted for a Golden Martini. The combination of Grey Goose, elderflower, Sauternes and 24k gold leaf packed a punch and made for a great photo. My date for the night, a close friend from my undergraduate days, went for the Basilica, a refreshing tipple involving kiwi, basil and egg white. Both drinks were well-balanced and beautifully presented.
Colony MakiZushi
After a few drinks, we proceeded upstairs to the restaurant. The menu here is wide ranging, including sushi and teppanyaki alongside traditional European fare. We went for a mix of dishes from the different cuisines, including scallops, Thai red duck curry, and sushi rolls. While all the dishes were delightful, we both agreed that the stand out winner was my starter. Melt-in-the-mouth teppanyaki fois gras, with walnuts and pomegranate seeds. The sharpness of the pomegranate cut through the richness of the meat perfectly, and the walnuts added just the right amount of texture.
Colony King Scallops
The service was fantastic, staff were attentive without being overbearing and the quality of the food and drinks was superb. The restaurant is peaceful but not too quiet. Moreover, the long service hours will appeal to night owls or those recovering from jet lag.
24 Mayfair are ambitious, and have plans for a spectacular event series. From live entertainment, to rare whiskey tastings, this is a club that has something for everyone. If you’re looking for somewhere that combines traditional standards of service with a friendly atmosphere, then look no further.
